This second-hand - but good condition hard-back, is a must for any fans of legendary movie director, John Frankenheimer.
The 294 page book (with photographs), was first published in 1998, and traces the career of the American maverick director. I was primarily interested in his work on the films Grand Prix and Ronin, but as a thorough documentary of his work, it also covers in detail all films – from 1956 to Ronin in 1998. These include: The Young Stranger, The Young Savages, Birdman Of Alcatraz, All Fall Down, The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days In May, The Train, Seconds, Grand Prix, The Extraordinary Seaman, The Fixer, The Gypsy Moths, I walk The Line, The Horsemen, Impossible Object, The Iceman Cometh, French Connection 2, Black Sunday, Prophecy, The Challenge, The Rainmaker, The Holcroft Covenant, Riviera, 52 Pick Up, Dead Bang, The Fourth War, Years Of The Gun, Agaianst The Wall, The Burning Season, Andersonville, The Island Of Dr. Moreau, George Wallace, and of course, Ronin.
It’s an incredibly 40-year body of work, and the chapters on each film provide a detailed record of: Year of production; production details and credits; cast list; synopsis; comment and conclusions. Those chapters are also interspersed with passages from Frankenheimer and interviews with the man himself.
This therefore provides a thorough and highly personalised account, with vivid recollections and stories from a truly illustrious career.
