You don’t have to be a particular fan of war films – heck, you don’t even have to be a film buff – to know ‘The Napalm’ scene in the 1979 Francis Ford Coppola movie; Apocalypse Now.

Robert Duvall provides a legendary performance as the hardened yet eccentric warmonger; Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore. After Martin Sheen’s character (a troubled and edgy Special Operations veteran called Captain Benjamin L. Willard), is tasked with following the Nung River, to track Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando); Willard is dropped into the ‘care’ of Bill Kilgore.

That meeting became Cinematic Gold. Kilgore is a keen (but clearly demented) surfer. He is also the commanding officer of a squadron of Air Cavalry attack helicopters. The scene depicts Kilgore casually speaking on a beach, whilst many of his men are surfing in a river, upon the waves caused by mass carpet-bombing. Later, Kilgore utters the timeless quote: “I love the smell of Napalm in the morning…”

Based loosely upon Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart Of Darkness’; the actual filming of the Saigon/Cambodian war epic was as controversial and chaotic as the film itself; from Brando turning up for filming overweight; Martin Sheen spiraling out of control with alohol and narcotics abuse (and suffering a heart attack on set); huge sets being destroyed in unpredictable tropical weather; and Coppola constantly delaying release whilst he edited and re-edited literally millions of feet of film footage.

Besides this, the movie was finally released to massive public and critical acclaim (it received the legendary ‘Palme d’Or’ at Cannes; was nominated by the Academy Award for Best Picture; and was honoured with the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture. Apocalypse Now was also deemed “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant”, and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2001.
