This T-Shirt celebrates an era of Formula 1 that was truly epic; an era that without doubt, gave birth to the most fascinating, flamboyant, flawed and charismatic World Champion there has ever been; James Hunt. The titanic battle between James Hunt at McLaren and Niki Lauda is a thing of genuine legend. We read with great interest during 2011 that Ron Howard is planning to make a film depicting this golden era... let’s hope that happens!

Some background: The James Hunt crash helmet featured on this Junk Male T-Shirt, has been photographed and then repainted from an original helmet, that was worn by the man himself. How can I vouch for that? Well, I own that helmet and took the photograph! It was never actually used by James ‘in anger’ during a race. It was in fact only ever used in the famous Morcambe & Wise ‘Texaco’ advert, after which, it was donated to the Head of Marketing for the Texaco petroleum company. Many years later, it was sold during an Autosport auction – which was where I acquired it.

James carried this distinctive helmet design though his entire Formula 1 career; the red, blue and yellow bands were his Wellington College colours.

For the T-Shirt design, we took a few liberties with the sponsorship decals that James wore in-period… purely to describe his personality, you understand. We changed his name to ‘Jolly Horny’, because he was universally acknowledged to be an expert ‘swordsman’. We changed his sponsor logo from Good Year to ‘Good Beer’, to convey his penchant for copious amounts of alcohol (although his preferred tipple was actually Rosé wine); we changed his Texaco Sponsorship to ‘Tax-Exile’, because under the advice of his brother and manager; James fled to live in Spain during the 1970’s to protect his fortune (this was at the time of the Labour Governments pernicious 80% tax on the wealthy). We also put the number 24 above the breast (his racing number from the early Hesketh Racing days).

We were going to produce a spin on another of his sponsors: Duckhams… but we couldn’t think of anything to rhyme with that.

These T-Shirts are part of our popular ‘Earth Positive’ range, which means that they are sourced ethically – and are certified carbon-neutral. The organic cotton we used is the highest grade, and consequently, the most comfortable and soft T-Shirts you will ever wear!

Please bear in mind that Junk Male Clothing only ever produces hand-printed original T-Shirts – in strict, limited-editions. We have only printed THIRTY James Hunt T-Shirts – and that’s in total – not thirty of each size. For a limited time, we’re offering this small batch at just £40 – a saving of £55 off the retail price. For such exclusivity and quality, that’s a great discount... be quick, ‘Gentlemen, start your engines...’
